What I Learned About the Dental Veneer Procedure

The dental veneer procedure should not intimidate you.  If the dentist suggests dental veneers, do not panic or assume your teeth are in terrible condition.  The dental veneer procedure utilizes some truly amazing technology. This oral health solution provides the strength and reliability of regular teeth along with a beautiful smile.  The dental veneer procedure can take as few as one appointment.

About Dental Veneers

Dental veneers consist of thin porcelain, composite resin or ceramic shells that professionals directly bond to the tooth.  The dental veneer procedure is necessary to remedy the shape and color of your teeth. Provide your dental veneers with the proper care and they will last upwards of an entire decade.

The Dental Veneer Procedure

The placement of dental veneers requires a highly precise technique.  The dentist will remove a small amount of the enamel from the tooth and replace that area with a shell.  This procedure requires two appointments. The initial appointment is necessary to take measurements and set expectations.

The dentist sends the data to the laboratory where the veneers are made to suit the shape and size of your preferred smile. Once about a week passes, the veneers will be ready for placement. The next appointment presents the opportunity for the application of a local anesthetic. While it is not completely necessary, the use of such an anesthetic helps reduce patient nervousness and potential discomfort.

The dentist then removes about .5mm worth of enamel from the natural tooth. The dentist prepares the veneer as well as the tooth for the bonding process. After bonding the veneer and the tooth to one another with the use of a special light, the dentist will repeat the process for however many teeth the patient wants.

After the Dental Veneer Procedure

Once the dental veneer procedure is complete, the treated portion of the tooth will likely prove sensitive for a short period of time.  Once this period passes, the veneers can be treated just like regular teeth. Veneers are quite durable and strong yet you should refrain from putting any unnecessary stress on them.

Do not use your teeth to open packages, chew ice, pens, pencils or other objects. You will return to the dentist's office about a month after the dental veneer procedure to have an evaluation performed.  This is an opportunity for the dentist to evaluate your progress and provide advice, tips and answers to any questions you might have.

The Appeal of Dental Veneers

It is clear the dental veneer process is nothing to be afraid of.  Opt for the dental veneer procedure and you will no longer have to live with misshapen, stained or ugly teeth. Your veneers will not stain as time progresses as they are made of materials that are not susceptible to residue from foods and beverages.

Discuss dental veneers with your dentist during your next appointment to find out if they are ideal for your oral health and beauty.
