Bring Your Teen to an Invisalign® Dentist During Their Senior Year

Invisalign DentistAs an Invisalign® dentist, we typically straighten the teeth of our adult patients. However, Invisalign® is also an excellent solution for older teens who have all of their adult teeth. Typically, by the time your child reaches their senior year of high school, they will be ready for this discreet procedure. Beginning their orthodontic treatment now has several advantages, namely that you will be able to supervise them before they head off to college. While the process of straightening teeth with clear aligners is relatively easy, it still requires establishing a routine, and this is where your involvement becomes helpful.

If you are unfamiliar with the treatment process, it works similar to traditional braces in that pressure is applied to certain teeth in order to move them into the correct position. Where traditional braces accomplish this using a series of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign® does so using prefabricated clear aligners. Each aligner is designed to target specific teeth and move them just enough to keep the process moving forward without damaging your teeth in the process. An aligner is worn for around two weeks at a time and then switched out for the next one in the series. By wearing all of them, teeth are moved from crooked to straight over the course of several months to a year or so.

As an Invisalign® dentist, we know there are several distinct advantages to teens using clear aligners. To begin, they are discreet and that means few people will notice your child is undergoing an orthodontic treatment. The teenage years can be difficult enough without worrying about self-esteem issues caused by metal braces. That is simply not a concern when wearing clear aligners.

Another benefit is that they are meant to be worn for around 22 hours per day and taken out to eat and brush teeth. This makes a significant impact on your teen's routine. Instead of needing to change what they eat and how they eat it (as they would with braces), your child can simply remove their aligners and bite into their favorite slice of pizza, worry-free. For teens who are on-the-go or are picky eaters, this aspect of the treatment is important. Additionally, by being able to brush and floss like normal, there is less of a chance your teen will develop cavities during their treatment or that their teeth will become severely stained in the process. Another worthy point is that aligners can come out while playing sports or an instrument in a band. Essentially, when it comes time for important activities, your teen can take out their set of aligners and live life like normal. Just remind them to put it back in as soon as possible so the treatment time is not delayed.
