4 Tips for Better Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is not only for an attractive smile. If you fail to take your oral health seriously, you will be battling with different oral diseases such as gum diseases, oral cancer and bad breath, all of which sometimes require invasive treatment. Sometimes, the issue is not about poor oral hygiene, but doing it the wrong way.

Tips to improve dental hygiene

The following are dental hygiene tips to keep the oral cavity clean and healthy:

1. Brush correctly

When brushing, the teeth should not be the only focus. The gums, tongue and roof of the mouth are also essential parts of the oral cavity and need to be cleaned. When brushing, it is better to brush bristles at a 45-degree angle, such that it meets with the teeth and the gums. Brushing should go back and forth as well as up and down. The same process should be repeated for the inner areas of the teeth and gums.

Afterward, the person must clean the tongue and roof the mouth to get rid of the bacteria that cause bad breath. Experts recommend brushing the teeth and gums gently to prevent injuries. Preferably, brushing should occur twice daily, especially after meals.

2. Floss regularly

Brushing is essential, but it is not enough to keep the entire teeth clean. Brush bristles hardly reach the spaces between the teeth. Flossing helps to clean food debris or particles from areas that are inaccessible to the tooth. Anyone who cares about their oral health should cultivate the habit of flossing every day, especially before bedtime.

3. Eat teeth-friendly diet.

Not many people pay attention to the effects of foods and snacks on their teeth. Teeth-friendly diet includes vegetables, chicken, cheese, nuts and fruits. Some foods help to mineralize the enamel and strengthen the oral cavity. Another benefit of cheese is that it helps stimulate saliva production in the mouth to neutralize the effect of acids.

4. Reduce intake of alcohol and sodas

Tobacco is certainly detrimental to the oral cavity. Also, taking sweets to hide the odor of tobacco in the mouth will only cause more damages. Excess alcohol intake and soda are not advisable. They contain phosphorus, which is a healthy mineral for the body. However, in excess, they are harmful and could lower the level of calcium in the body and cause dry mouth. These, in turn, result in oral issues such as tooth decay and periodontal disease.

Instead of alcohols and sodas, it is better to opt for water and beverages that help to strengthen the enamel, both of which will also help to hydrate the body.

Remember that following the tips listed above is not an excuse not to seek professional dental care. Your oral hygiene routine is not complete unless you create a habit of visiting the dentist regularly for an oral checkup and deep teeth cleaning.
